Leaside High School Placed on Precautionary Lockdown Following Possible Shooting Incident
Leaside High School in Toronto’s Leaside neighbourhood was placed on a precautionary lockdown on Wednesday after reports of a possible shooting near or at the campus prompted a swift response from authorities and heightened concern among students, staff, and local residents.
According to initial reports from the scene, a loud noise that could have been a gunshot was heard in the vicinity of the school, triggering immediate safety protocols. School administrators acted quickly, initiating a shelter‑in‑place lockdown to ensure the safety of everyone on campus while awaiting law enforcement to arrive and assess the situation.
Police officers responded promptly and established a secure perimeter around the school and surrounding streets. During the lockdown, students, teachers, and staff were instructed to stay inside classrooms, lock doors, and remain away from windows as officers conducted a methodical sweep of the building and nearby areas. Additional emergency personnel were also seen in the area supporting the investigation and helping to maintain order.
At this time, officials have not released confirmation of any injuries or identified a suspect connected to the incident. Investigators are working to determine whether gunfire was actually discharged and, if so, whether it occurred on school grounds or in a nearby location that impacted the lockdown decision. Law enforcement has indicated that no ongoing threat has been confirmed, but the investigation remains active.
Parents and guardians were urged not to approach the school during the lockdown and to wait for official communications from Toronto police and school district authorities. Officials reiterated that precautionary lockdowns are standard procedure when there is even a potential threat, as student and staff safety is the highest priority.
Updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available and once the lockdown is lifted.
