With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we mourn the passing of Mr. Matt Stone of Wabash, Indiana—a beloved leader, mentor, and pillar of the Wabash City Schools community. For 24 years, Mr. Stone dedicated his life to serving WCS in countless roles, including coach, athletic director, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Operations Officer. His impact reaches far beyond titles, touching generations of students, athletes, colleagues, and families.
Mr. Stone was truly the heart of Apache athletics. He believed wholeheartedly in the power of sports to shape character—teaching discipline, teamwork, resilience, and integrity. He poured that belief into every athlete he coached, every program he supported, and every season he helped guide. To him, athletics were not just about competition, but about building strong individuals and a united community. His passion was not just part of his job—it was who he was.
Yet, beyond his remarkable professional legacy, Mr. Stone’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He cherished the simple but meaningful traditions—tailgating at Purdue football games, attending Chicago Cubs games on his children’s birthdays, and celebrating anniversaries surrounded by loved ones. Those moments of laughter and togetherness were where his heart truly found its home. He was also a proud and loving “Pop-Pop” to Addi, Clark, Palmer, Selah, and Lincoln, a role he embraced with immense joy.
Mr. Stone leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in years alone, but in the lives he changed, the relationships he built, and the strength he brought to an entire community. His leadership, kindness, and unwavering dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As Wabash City Schools honors his memory by keeping the lights on at all sports fields, it serves as a powerful symbol of the light he brought into so many lives—a light that will never truly fade.
We will remember his leadership.
We will remember his passion.
We will remember his love—for family, for students, and for the game.
Though he is no longer with us, Mr. Stone’s spirit will forever remain a part of Apache athletics, the Wabash community, and the hearts of all who knew him.
May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to shine brightly.
